2. Mansa Devi Temple
A long time ago, there was a cow that came to a hill in the Shivalik Hills every day. It would give milk near three stones on the hill. People noticed these stones were special, so they started worshipping them. They later found out the stones were the forehead of a goddess named Shri Sati.
A temple was built for Shri Mansa Devi by Maharaja Gopal Singh of Manimajra in a village called Bilaspur, around 1811-1815. Another temple nearby was built by Sh. Karam Singh, the Maharaja of Patiala, in 1840.
These temples were taken care of by the Manimajra State. But when the princely states merged into Pepsu, the government stopped looking after them. The temples were left alone. The king of Manimajra appointed a priest to take care of one temple. But after the merger, the priests had to manage the temples by themselves. They couldn’t keep the temples nice or help the visitors properly. So, the temples got worse over time. There were hardly any facilities for the people who came to visit. Legend says the place where Mata Mansa Devi temple stands today is where another part of Sati Mata’s head fell. At first, the temple was known as Mata Sati’s temple. It’s said that King Gopaldas of Manimajra built a tunnel from his fort to the temple, which is about 3 kilometers long.
