Mansa Devi Temple in Haridwar

History 

Once upon a time, in the Shivalik Hills, a cow came every day to give milk at three stones on a hill. Local people noticed these stones were holy and started worshiping them. They later realized the stones were part of the goddess Sati’s forehead.

So, they built a temple for the goddess Mansa Devi. Maharaja Gopal Singh of Manimajra built the main temple between 1811 and 1815 in Bilaspur village, Panchkula district. Another temple, called the Patiala temple, was built by Sh. Karam Singh in 1840, 200 meters away.

Originally, the temple was supported by the Manimajra State. But when the princely states joined Pepsu, the government stopped supporting it, and the temples were neglected. The Manimajra raja then appointed priests to take care of the temple. But after the merger, these priests had to manage the temple themselves. They couldn’t keep it up, and the temple got worse over time.

Legend says the temple stands where another part of Sati Mata’s head fell. Initially, it was called the Mata Sati temple. There’s a belief that King Gopaldas of Manimajra built a 3-kilometer-long tunnel from his fort to the temple.

They sell bags with a coconut and flowers for about 50 rupees, and you can also get flower plates for about 20 rupees. Along the way to the temple, there are people selling things like jewelry and music. The Navaratri festival is celebrated here, and many come to fulfill their needs.

You can visit another temple called Chandi Devi Temple. You can take a cable car or bus from Mansa Devi Temple. You can buy tickets for both temples together. You can walk or take a rickshaw to visit Har ki Pauri.

Highlights of Mansa Devi Mandir Temple:

Besides the pretty temple and its nice views, another thing people like to see here is the ropeway that takes you to the temple. It’s called Mansa Devi Udankhatola and it was made to make it easier for people who visit the temple.

The ropeway trip goes for about 540 meters and goes up to 178 meters from where it starts. Remember, the times the ropeway runs can change depending on the month.
