Central Museum in Indore
Central Museum Indore started in 1923 as part of the education department called ‘Nararatna Mandir’ by the Holkar state. It began in a building on M.G. Road, now known as Devlalikar Gallery, during the rule of Holkar king Tukojirao III. The main goal was to gather photos and documents of important people, and it had a library too. While collecting artifacts and antiquities from across the state, the decision was made to establish a museum.
In 1929, the museum was set up within Nararatna Mandir. Because of its central location in the Holkar State, it became known as the Central Museum. In 1965, the museum moved to its current building. Over the years, it has evolved with changes in museology and the preferences of the public. In 1975, the museum added galleries for coins and antiquities, named Devi Ahilya Mudra Withi. While a gallery for antiquities and excavation material was also created, stone sculptures remained a significant attraction.
In 1977, stone sculptures from Hinglajgarh in the Mandsaur district were brought to the museum, adding to its collection.
